Where is the main kite market in Lahore?
Mochi Gate, in the Walled City. One of the thirteen Mughal-era gates of old Lahore, its narrow alleys have sold kites for generations. During Basant 2026 it stayed packed past midnight, with buyers stocking up on kites, spools and festival decorations.
If you have never been, the experience is not a shop so much as a street: dimly lit lanes, stacked paper, spools hanging in doorways, and a lot of people who have been doing this since before the ban. It is worth seeing once even if you end up ordering online.
The other traditional selling points are Shah Alam Market and Old Anarkali. Between them and Mochi Gate, that is where the Lahore kite trade has physically lived for as long as anyone tracks it.
Which areas are designated for approved sellers?
The Punjab government designated seller clusters in the Walled City around Mochi Gate, in Gulshan-e-Ravi, and at Thokar Niaz Baig. Approved sellers can also be found through the live map on the e-Biz Punjab Portal rather than by guesswork.
This is the part most buyers do not know exists. Under the 2025 Ordinance both manufacturers and sellers are registered, and the portal is the authoritative record. If you are buying in person and want certainty, checking the map takes a minute and removes the question entirely.
How do I check a kite is legal before buying?
Scan the QR sticker. Every legal kite carries one that resolves to the e-Biz Punjab portal and shows the registered manufacturer’s name. A kite with no sticker, or one whose sticker does not resolve, cannot be verified and may be confiscated.
- Check the sticker scans — not just that a sticker exists.
- Check the size: patang within 35″ × 30″, gudda within 40″ × 34″.
- Ask what the string is. If the answer is anything other than cotton, walk away.
- Be suspicious of a price that seems impossible. It usually is.
Is the market cheaper than buying online?
Sometimes, and less often than people expect. Rates at Mochi Gate moved daily through the 2026 season and rose steeply in the final week. Buying early beats buying late in either channel, and the market’s late-week premium is real.
The honest trade-off: the market gives you selection, atmosphere and the ability to handle stock before buying. Ordering online gives you a published price, a delivery date, and no advance payment. We would rather tell you that plainly than pretend the market has nothing to offer.
