Basant Holidays in Lahore: What Closed in 2026, and What 12–14 March 2027 Means
Basant 2027 falls on Friday 12 to Sunday 14 March in Lahore, so most of the festival already sits on the weekend. In 2026 the Punjab government notified public holidays for the Friday and Saturday of the festival, creating a long weekend; a similar notification for 2027 has not been issued yet, and this page updates when it is.

- Basant 2027 is announced for 12–14 March — a Friday-to-Sunday window, mirroring 2026's shape
- In 2026, Punjab notified 6–7 February as public holidays, and Kashmir Day stretched the break to three days
- No 2027 holiday notification exists yet as of late August 2026 — treat any circulating list as guesswork
- Schools and government offices follow the S&GAD notification, not social media
- The long weekend is why rooftops, food and kite stock all book out early
Every Basant question eventually becomes a calendar question: are schools off, is Friday a working day, and how many days do you actually have for the rooftop? The 2026 revival gave Lahore its first official Basant holidays in a generation, and the pattern it set is the best guide to what 12–14 March 2027 will look like. Here's what was actually notified last time, what is and isn't confirmed for 2027, and how Lahore households — ours at SpeedX Kites included — plan a festival that lands on a weekend.
What holidays were declared for Basant 2026?
Two public holidays: Friday 6 and Saturday 7 February, notified on 3 February 2026 by the Services and General Administration Department, per Dawn's report on the notification. Because Kashmir Day fell on Thursday 5 February, government offices in Punjab were closed three days running, and with Sunday the 8th — the festival's final day — most of the province experienced a four-day break.
Two details from that cycle worth remembering. The notification came just three days before the festival, so anyone waiting for official word to book travel or order kites was planning blind until the final week. And the holidays covered the festival's first two days, not all three — Sunday needed no declaration.
When is Basant 2027, and does it need a holiday at all?
The dates are official: 12–14 March 2027, marked by the Punjab Chief Minister. Check a calendar and the shape jumps out — Friday, Saturday, Sunday. Two of the three festival days are already non-working for most schools and many offices.
That leaves Friday 12 March as the only day a notification would matter for, which is exactly the 2026 pattern: the government declared the festival's Friday a holiday last time. Nothing for 2027 has been notified as of 28 August 2026, and given 2026's three-days-before timing, expect the official word close to the festival rather than months ahead.
Will schools be closed for Basant 2027?
In 2026, the public holidays applied province-wide, and schools closed with them. For 2027 the honest answer is: almost certainly for any notified day, automatically for Saturday–Sunday where schools follow a five-day week, and unknown beyond that until the S&GAD notification lands.
Treat circulating "confirmed holiday" graphics with suspicion between now and then — every festival cycle produces them weeks before anything is signed. The only two sources that settle it are the official notification and the Lahore district administration, and our Basant 2027 page logs each announcement the day it appears.
Why the long weekend matters for planning
The 2026 long weekend concentrated an entire province's festival into 72 hours, and three things ran out: rooftop space, food orders, and kite stock. Historic havelis in the Walled City were booked out for kite-flying parties well before the festival, with caterers running separate day and night menus.
Kites were the same story compressed further — retail sale was only permitted in the final week, and the famous string names went first. That supply squeeze is a licensing feature, not a shop failure: manufacturing is limited to four approved districts and the sale window is short. It's also why we take pre-bookings months ahead — your stock is held under your name before the long-weekend rush, and you settle payment when delivery becomes legal.
How should you plan the 2027 weekend now?
- Count your rooftop early. Headcount decides kites, string and food — every other decision follows it.
- Assume Friday 12 March becomes the notified holiday, but don't book non-refundable plans on it until the notification exists.
- Reserve festival supplies before the sale window opens. The week-of scramble was 2026's defining buyer experience.
- Watch the official channels in early March for the holiday notification and any zone or timing rules attached to it.
Frequently asked questions
Is Basant a public holiday in Pakistan?
Not nationally. Basant holidays are declared by the Punjab government for the festival window, as happened on 6–7 February 2026. Other provinces observe nothing — Sindh bans the festival's kite flying entirely.
What days of the week are Basant 2027?
Friday 12, Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 March 2027 — the same Friday-to-Sunday shape as the 2026 festival.
When will the Basant 2027 holiday notification come?
If 2026 is the guide, days before the festival — the last notification was issued on 3 February for a 6 February start. We publish it the day it lands.
Were banks and offices closed for Basant 2026?
Government offices closed on the notified holidays, and the Kashmir Day–Basant sequence produced three consecutive closed days. Private businesses set their own hours, and many in Lahore simply moved to the rooftops.
